Tryout Information
Date: 1st of February, 2026
Location: Rosebud Stadium
Under 10 Boys: 9:00AM - 10:30AM
Under 10 Girls: 11:00AM - 12:30PM
Under 12 Boys: 1:00PM - 2:30PM
Under 12 Girls and Under 14 Girls: 3:00PM - 4:30PM
Under 14 Boys: 5:00PM - 6:30PM
- Must be a SPBA Domestic Player prior to trying out.
- Wear a reversible singlet
- Bring a basketball
Program Summary
Sharks Academy is a specialised development program designed to offer relevant and high-quality basketball opportunities for those not participating in the mainstream VJBL Program.
Instead of participating in regular Friday night games, Sharks Academy teams participate in three tournaments throughout the year. The Academy Program caters to athletes from Under 10’s to Under 14’s (subject to interest), providing an entrance into SPBA’s style of play and a pathway for skill development and competition.
The Sharks Academy embodies SPBA’s commitment to delivering accessible and meaningful basketball experiences for all aspiring players.
Eligibility
Anyone currently playing in our domestic competition, and not participating in VJBL, is eligible to try out for the Sharks Academy. We’re looking for U10 to U14 athletes with the desire to improve their skills and compete at a higher level.
Athletes must be born in 2013-2018.

Tryout Information

Times
- Under 10 Boys: 9:00AM – 10:30AM
- Under 10 Girls: 11:00AM – 12:30PM

- Under 14 Boys: 5:00PM – 6:30PM

Commitment
Trainings
Under 10s – 1 x 60-minute team training session per week.
These sessions will take place on Friday evenings. Training will focus on building fundamental skills, teamwork, and introducing game strategies. Coaches will work closely with the players to ensure they receive individual attention, helping them grow their confidence and understanding of the game.
Under 12s and 14s – 1 x 60-minute team training session per week.
These teams will train on Friday evenings. Training will emphasize player development, with a focus on skills enhancement, teamwork, and advanced game strategies. Coaches will tailor sessions to meet the needs of their team, providing personalized guidance to ensure each player improves their performance and overall understanding of the game.
All players should arrive at training at least 15 minutes prior to training so they are ready to start at their allocated time.
Tournaments
Teams will participate in a minimum of three tournaments in 2025. These include the following:
- South East Junior Basketball Tournament (SEJBT): 7–9th March 2026
- Nunawading Tournament: 6–8th June 2026
- Southern Peninsula Domestic Tournament: 3–5th July 2026
Program Duration
The Sharks Academy program commences 13/02/2026 and concludes on 05/07/2026. Participants are expected to attend all training sessions and tournaments within this period.
Teams do not train over school holidays.

COSTS
Cost
To secure your spot in the program an initial payment must be made by the 16th February 2026.
The registration fees also cover:

Uniform
All Sharks Academy players must have a minimum of:
- Playing Singlet
- Playing Shorts
New Balance playing singlet and New Balance playing shorts.

What is the process of making Sharks Academy?
Coaches will evaluate players at the tryouts based on skill, potential, and attitude. Team announcements will be on the 4th of February where players will be invited to join the Sharks Academy and begin training in 13th of February.
Registration for Sharks Academy Tryouts will open on the 31st of October at 7pm, with try outs taking place on the 1st of February 2026.
