The Southern Peninsula Basketball Association’s Winter 2026 Community Competition season is just around the corner. Below, you’ll find all the information you need to register your team and get started for the upcoming season.

Key Dates

Senior Competitions (U18 and above): Start date: April 13th
Junior Competitions (U8-U16): Start date: April 20th

Registration Process

All team and player registrations are managed through the PlayHQ platform. Here’s how to get started:

Club Teams:
1. Contact your club to initiate your team registration.
2. Ensure all players, coaches, and team managers register online using a valid email address.

Independent Teams (Seniors Only):
1. Create your team by CLICKING HERE.
2. Register all players, coaches, and team managers using the team-specific link.

 

Deadlines:

  • Seniors: Team registrations close on 3rd April 2026, 5pm
  • Juniors: Team registrations close on 12th April 2026, 5pm

Teams will continue to be accepted during the grading period.
Teams must have at least 5 registered players to be fixtured in the competition.

Senior registration multiple teams

A players initial registration for their first team will be charged at the full registration fee. Players registering for additional teams are able to register at a discounted rate of $40 per player.

This  will take effect from the Winter competition 2026 and will apply to every registration after the first.

Insurance & Levy:

  • Basketball Victoria License Fee:
      • $29 per junior participant (annual)
    • $43 per senior participant (annual)
  • Basketball Australia Game Development Levy: $5.50 per competition player annually from 1st January 2024.

Forfeit Fees:

  • Notified Forfeit (2+ business days notice): $70
  • Unnotified Forfeit (less than 2 business days notice): $140

Finals Eligibility & Structure

Eligibility: Players must participate in at least 50% of the season’s games to qualify for finals.

Structure:
Semi-Finals: 1v4 and 2v3
Grand Finals: Winners of the Semi-Finals

Uniform Requirements:

All players must wear matching singlets and the same colour shorts by Round 4. Incorrect uniforms will result in a 3-point penalty per player.

Teams are encouraged to use reversible numbered singlets to assist with colour clashes. Pockets in shorts are not permitted for safety reasons.

AGM Attendance:

Teams must have at least one representative attend the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Failure to attend will result in a fine. Independent teams that notify the SPBA at least 48 hours in advance may be treated as a notified forfeit, while those who do not will face unnotified forfeit fines. Clubs must ensure representatives from at least 50% of their teams attend; otherwise, non-attending teams will incur fines.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Representative Player Rule is designed to maintain fair competition by limiting the number of representative players on each team. Representative players are allocated a point value based on their participation in the Victorian Junior Basketball League (VJBL) within the last six months. Teams can have a maximum of 8 points worth of representative players. This rule applies to U14 competitions and younger. Ask your club or check our By-laws for more information

Points are based on their team level and age:

  • 1st Team Top Age Player: 3 points
  • 1st Team Bottom Age Player: 2 points
  • 2nd Team Top Age Player: 2 points
  • 2nd Team Bottom Age Player: 1 point
  • 3rd Team or Below: 1 point

Teams are graded into divisions accordingly, and the rule ensures no team gains an unfair advantage.

Yes, but they must register for each team. Players are not allowed to play in more than one team within the same division.

Players must meet the age requirements as of December 31st of the competition year. Players under 16 must have parental consent to participate in senior competitions. Additionally, players may only play in one team per division and must adhere to fill-in player rules.

Grading occurs in two phases during the first five rounds of the season. This ensures teams are placed in the appropriate division to promote fair competition. During grading, ladders and results are hidden to maintain the integrity of the process. After Round 3, teams may be moved to different divisions as needed.

Fixtures are typically released on a week-to-week basis during the grading phase. After grading is complete, the full season fixture and finals schedule are released within two weeks. Changes to fixtures may occur, and teams should check the fixture regularly, especially within 72 hours of their game.

The SPBA does not accept fixture requests to ensure fairness across the competition. Exemptions are granted in extreme circumstances but only due to operational reasons.

Players can transfer between teams, but the process varies depending on whether they are moving between clubs or within the same club. For club-to-club transfers, a 14-day notice period is required unless waived by the original club. The destination club must verify that all transfer requirements are met before the player can participate.

Regular season games consist of two 18-minute halves. The clock only stops for all whistles in the last 2 minutes of the game if the score is within a 15-point margin. For semi-finals and grand finals, the clock stops for all timeouts and whistles in the last 1 minute of the first half and in the last 3 minutes of the second half if the score is within a 15-point margin.

Regular season games do not have overtime. In semi-finals and grand finals, overtime periods are 3 minutes each and continue until a winner is determined.

Teams must process forfeits via Teampay 48 hours before the scheduled game to be charged a notified forfeit fee of $70. If less than 48 hours notice is given, the team will be charged an unnotified forfeit fee of $140.

The reason for this cost is SPBA still have to pay the expenses associated with the competition. For forfeits within 48 hours we also still need to pay referees, staff and other costs.

Yes, modified rules are in place for junior competitions to promote skill development and fair play which can be viewed in the By-laws.

The Mercy Rule is applied to prevent one-sided games. When a team reaches a certain point margin, they must adjust their defence to retreat to the 3-point line after scoring or dead ball situation.

A Behavioural Technical Foul is issued for any disrespect shown toward referees or their calls. This includes questioning calls, gesturing, or using inappropriate language. The penalty for a technical foul is two free throws plus possession for the opposing team.

Repeated fouls result in escalating suspensions:

  • 2 technical fouls: 1-week suspension
  • 3 technical fouls: 3-week suspension
  • 4 technical fouls: 6-week suspension
  • 5 technical fouls: Automatic season suspension

The SPBA is a not-for-profit organisation which essentially means it has no owner and is run under a volunteer Board of Management which is elected by the members.

With this comes important government regulatory requirements which includes maintaining a quorum at AGMs.
