2024 ANNUAL AWARDS

We are delighted to announce that nominations are now open for the Annual Awards for the Southern Peninsula Basketball Association (SPBA). These prestigious awards aim to recognise and celebrate the exceptional contributions and achievements of individuals and clubs within our vibrant basketball community.

Nomination Period: July 2023 – June 2024

Nominations close: 31st August 2024

Award Categories:

  • Community Club of the Year
  • Domestic Coach of the Year
  • Young Domestic Player of the Year
  • Domestic Referee of the Year
  • Senior Referee of the Year
  • Supporter of the Year
  • Volunteer of the Year
  • Club Person of the Year
  • Service Awards

View each award's criteria below:

The Volunteer of the Year award goes to an individual who has made an exemplary voluntary contribution and who through their volunteering has made a significant impact in the community having received no income from Basketball (Note: honoraria excepted) within the nominated period.

The criteria for judgement are subjective, but considerable involvement of an individual’s own free time to benefit of basketball in the region is the basis.

To be considered the nomination can include:

  • Demonstrated outstanding commitment to the Basketball community
  • Demonstrated outstanding reliability, positivity, flexibility and initiative
  • Living the SPBA values

The selection process for this award is open and nominees can be received from any member of SPBA through the online nomination portal. Nominations are assessed by the awards panel.

The Club Person of the Year award goes to an individual who has made a significant and outstanding contribution by an individual to Basketball on the Southern Peninsula. This award considers contributions both within the nominated period and prior to the award period.

The criteria for judgement are subjective, but the individual will have made considerable impact within the basketball community.

The selection process for this award is open and nominees can be received from any member of SPBA through the online nomination portal. Nominations are assessed by the awards panel.

The Club of the Year award goes to an SPBA affiliated club in recognition of significant contribution to participation and community in the region during the nominated period.

To be eligible for this award the recipient:

  • Must be an affiliated club of SPBA
  • Must have facilitated programs which encourage growth in membership
  • Must comply with SPBA Club Participation Framework

To be considered the nomination can include:

  • Participation retention and growth
  • Contribution or activity to or in the community
  • Development of its members
  • Other activity which aligns with SPBA pillars of participation and community

The selection process for this award is a closed process with nominations being presented by the Competitions Manager & Head of Basketball and is assessed by the awards panel.

The Domestic Player of the Year award goes to an individual player who has demonstrated development and sportsmanship through the sport of basketball.

To be eligible for this award the recipient:

  • Aged 21 years of age or younger
  • Be a registered player in the SPBA domestic competition during the nominated period
  • Does not participate in a representative competition
  • Demonstrates the SPBA Values

To be considered the nomination can include:

  • Commitment to the develop of their skillset
  • Good sportsmanship
  • Community involvement

The selection process for this award accepts submissions from clubs and participants via the online submission portal. The submissions will be assessed by the awards panel.

The Representative Player of the Year award goes to an individual player who has achieved outstanding results in respect to their performances at a representative level or higher.

To be eligible for this award the recipient:

  • Be a registered player for Southern Peninsula Sharks during the nominated period
  • Demonstrates the SPBA Values
  • Demonstrated commitment to development opportunities

To be considered the nomination can include:

  • Commitment to develop their skillset
  • Selection for pathway programs
  • Good sportsmanship and leadership
  • Community involvement

The selection process for this award is an open process via the online submission portal. The submissions will be assessed by the awards panel.

The Domestic Coach of the Year award goes to coach who has made an exemplary coaching contribution in SPBA’s domestic program and has had a significant impact on the player/s and/or team/s they have coached during the nominated period.

To be eligible for this award the recipient:

  • Must have fulfilled SPBA compliance requirements
  • Demonstrate the SPBA Values
  • Must be an affiliated coach of SPBA or affiliated club

To be considered the nomination can include how the coach has helped develop the skills of their players/teams and developed a fun, safe and inclusive environment.

The selection process for this award accepts submissions from clubs and participants via the online submission portal. The submissions will be assessed by the awards panel.

The Representative Coach of the Year award goes to an individual coach who has made an exemplary coaching contribution in SPBA’s representative program and/or Basketball Victoria programs and has had a significant impact on the player/s and/or team/s they have coached during the nominated period.

To be eligible for this award the recipient:

  • Must be an accredited coach under the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme
  • Demonstrate the SPBA Values
  • Must have shown a commitment to development of their skills

The selection process for this award accepts submissions from participants via the online submission portal. The submissions will be assessed by the awards panel in conjunction with the Head of Basketball.

The Domestic Referee of the Year award goes to an individual referee who has achieved outstanding results in respect to their commitment to development within the SPBA referee pathway during the nominated period.

To be eligible for this award the recipient:

  • Must be an SPBA affiliated referee for a minimum of 12 months
  • Demonstrated commitment to development opportunities within the referee pathway at SPBA

To be considered the nomination can include:

  • Displaying positive qualities contributing to the referee program culture

The selection process for this award is a closed process and nominees are selected by the SPBA Referee Leadership team and are assessed by the awards panel.

The Senior Referee of the Year award goes to an individual referee who has achieved outstanding results in respect to their commitment to development above and beyond the internal referee pathway during the nominated period.

To be eligible for this award the recipient:

  • Must be an SPBA affiliated referee for a minimum of 12 months
  • Demonstrated commitment to development opportunities beyond the pathways offered at SPBA

To be considered the nomination can include:

  • Attendance at Basketball Victoria or Basketball Australia events
  • Officiating representative level games
  • Displaying positive qualities contributing to the referee program culture

The selection process for this award is closed and nominees are selected by the SPBA Referee Leadership team and are assessed by the awards panel.

The Supporter of the Year award goes to an individual who has displayed a high level of sportsmanship and support in a non-playing and non-coaching capacity.

To be eligible for this award the recipient:

  • Must have displayed a high level of sportsmanship and general support for teams and/or individuals in the Association

To be considered the nomination can include:

  • Displaying positive qualities in line with the SPBA Values
  • Their actions which have made basketball more accessible and inclusive

The selection process for this award is open and nominees can be received from any member of SPBA through the online nomination portal. Nominations are assessed by the awards panel.

The SPBA Service Awards recognise long serving individuals within the Association in non-playing roles.

Clubs are encouraged to nominate long serving individuals within their Club. The Association will also nominate long serving individuals for this award.

The long service award categories include:

  • Bronze – 15 years
  • Silver – 25 years
  • Gold – 35 years
  • Diamond – 50 years
