Facility Improvement & Expansion Updates
We are excited to share our recent progress on our facility expansion work and the development of existing venues. A significant amount of time and effort has been dedicated to ensuring we continue advocating for our fair share of indoor sport facilities and upgrading our existing facilities. We are pleased to highlight the developments we’ve achieved.
For those that aren’t familiar with our facilities responsibilities, SPBA is not only responsible for the majority of the maintenence and upkeep of our main venues at Dromana College and Rosebud Secondary, but we also maintain the facilities at Dromana Primary and Rosebud Primary!
Key Meetings and Collaborations
We have recently continued to engage with key stakeholders to drive our facilities’ improvements and expansion advocacy:
- Sam Groth MP, State Member for Nepean
- Zoe McKenzie MP, Federal Member for Flinders
- Jake Keogh, Basketball Victoria General Manager of Government Advocacy, Facilities & Strategy
- Mornington Peninsula Shire Councillors & Officers
- Mornington District Basketball Association
These meetings have been instrumental in aligning our goals with broader regional sports infrastructure initiatives.
Local School Facilities Upgrades
One of our current projects to address the shortage of facilities in the short term is upgrading local single court school facilities to competition standards. This initiative ensures high-quality facilities for schools and provides us with additional venues to accommodate our increasing participation.
The pilot for this project was Dromana Primary School which we now regularly use for competition and programs.
Venue Developments
Dromana College
- Roof Repairs: Collaborating with the Department of Education and Dromana College, we’re pleased to announce that over the past few weeks the roof at Dromana Stadium is in the progress of finally getting fixed. A significant amount of time and money has been invested into this and you might have noticed the scaffolding around the building over the past few weeks as the roof repair works are underway.
While the roof is going through the final stages of repair, there may still be minor disruptions. We ask for your patience during these final stages. - Court Drum Sanding: Once the roof repairs are complete, we will drum sand (back to the bare wood) the Dromana courts to enhance the playing surfaces. This has been delayed due to the leaks, which caused significant damage.
- Court 3 Upgrades: Over the break, Court 3 received new seating and a new score bench, improving the overall game-day experience.
Over the next 12 months, we also plan to:
- Install new backboards and rings
- Lowerable rings on Court 3
- Upgrades to the canteen
- Upgrades to the Pro Shop
Rosebud Stadium
- Painting and Resurfacing: Rosebud Stadium is currently getting a fresh coat of paint around the courts and will be resurfaced over these holidays too. Normally done once a year, we’ve added an additional resurfacing based on your feedback to provide better floors.
- Floor Cleaning Machine: We’ve purchased a floor cleaning machine, similar to the one at Dromana, to maintain cleaner playing surfaces.
All Venues
- New Bins: To keep up with the growing use of our venues, new bins have been installed across all locations.
Financial Commitment
The Southern Peninsula Basketball Association is responsible for the majority of costs in maintaining these venues. For the 2023/24 period, our investment includes:
– $23,000 for utilities
– $99,000 for maintenance
– $76,000 put aside for capital works
Looking ahead, our project investment for next year will exceed $200,000, ensuring we continue to improve and expand our facilities to meet the needs of our vibrant basketball community.
Peninsula Project
As most people would be aware, we engaged in a working group with Mornington Basketball, Western Port Basketball and Basketball Victoria known as the “Peninsula Project” from the end of 2022.
The purpose of this working group was to examine ways the three organisations can work together to streamline resources for basketball on the Mornington Peninsula.
As of mid-last year, the other Associations involved in the project withdrew from the core purpose of the project. SPBA still advocates strongly for the streamlining of resources for basketball on the Mornington Peninsula. However, all three Associations are still working together closer than ever before to support each other’s participation and initatives.
Thank you for your ongoing support and participation. We look forward to seeing you at our developing venues!
